Charity Silent Auction
for Community Autism Centre Inc. (CACI)

Members of the Maritimes Proinces Water & Wastewater Association (MPWWA) provide water and wastewater services to our communities every day to protect public health and the environment. This year, we are proud to hold our 11th Annual Charity Auction to benefit Community Autism Centre Inc. (CACI).

Initially starting as a small parent group in 1998, the Community Autism Centre Inc. (CACI) has grown into a Centre that now works with over 1500 people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Saint John area. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. Difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors in varying degrees characterized these disorders. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD. Some children and adults with ASD can fully perform all activities of daily living, while others require substantial support to perform basic activities.

“We really appreciate the commitment of the members of the Maritime Provinces Water and Wastewater Association with their upcoming silent auction, “said Deb MacDonald, CACI founder and Executive Director. “When one considers what your members do in their job for our Maritime Provinces and what your members are committing to do as an association for our community, I thank you.”

CACI began connecting with the Saint John community by providing support and resources to the community. As the needs within the city grew for families dealing with ASD, so did CACI’s efforts.

The Centre now provides a variety of services for families and persons living with ASD. The Community Autism Centre Inc. helps navigate the way through to access social supports for both children and adults. “Sometimes you can get a little lost in the maze of trying to get help that makes a difference; we walk with families through that maze until they can walk on their own! Then, if there is an obstacle or just the feeling of being lost, our doors are always open.” CACI has been a powerful beacon of support for families’, starting with an ASD diagnosis right through to adulthood and beyond. “It is quite an interesting meeting when we sit and help problem solve for persons who once came to us as children and working through the challenges of school and are now coming to see us and need support finding their way through a marriage. We are a family-based community centre that may be small but big in effort!”’

The Community Autism Centre Inc. provides counselling, employment support for adults living with ASD, advocacy, training for parents and professionals, community connecting along with parent support and access to the most current information and resources around ASD. And it is all done for free, no membership required, no fees and no small print! “We have a few paid staff…one full time and one part-time. The rest of our support comes from our board and from our volunteers. We do all of this out of one room, so our administration costs are very low while our dollars raised go primarily to our families and resources needed to support our families and persons living with ASD.”
